HOBO PICTURE ENGRAVED FROM INDIAN HEAD BUFFALO NICKELS AND JEFFERSON NICKELS:
HOBO is a term that refers to homeless migrants, particularly those who make a habit of hopping freight trains. The iconic image of a hobo is that of an itinerant beggar, one that was solidified in American culture during the Great Depression. Hobo's are often depicted carrying a bindle.
When the Indian Head or Buffalo nickel was introduced in 1913, it became popular among coin engravers. The big Indian head was a radical departure from previous designs, and would not be seen on any subsequent coins. The large thick profile gave the artist a larger template to work on, and allowed for finer detail.
Some hobo coin carvers now use the Jefferson nickel as their template. The carvers of today are referred to as Modern carvers.
Some old Hobo carved Nickels sell for as much as $225.00 on ebay.
